Momotarou（Easy Japanese)
むかしむかし、あるところに
おじいさんとおばあさんがすんでいました。
おじいさんは、山へ、しばかりに、
おばあさんは、川へ、せんたくに行きました。
おばあさんが川でせんたくをしていると、
大きな桃（もも）が、どんぶらこどんぶらこと、
川をながれてきました。
おばあさんは、そのももをひろって、
家へもってかえりました。
家でももをきると、
中から元気な男の子が出てきました。
おじいさんとおばあさんはとてもびっくりしました。
そして、その子を「ももたろう」となづけました。
ももたろうはすくすくそだって、
強い男の子になりました。
ある日、ももたろうは言いました。
「おにがしまにいって、わるいおにをたいじします。」
おじいさんとおばあさんは、
きびだんごをつくってもたせました。
ももたろうがあるいていると、
犬に会いました。
犬は言いました。
「そのきびだんごをください。
そうしたら、いっしょに行きます。」
ももたろうは、きびだんごをあげました。
犬は、なかまになりました。
つぎに、さるに会いました。
さるも、きびだんごをもらって、なかまになりました。
さいごに、きじに会いました。
きじも、きびだんごをもらって、なかまになりました。
ももたろうと3びきのなかまは、
おにがしまへ行きました。
そして、おにとたたかいました。
最後に、ももたろうたちは、おにをたおしました。
おには「もうわるいことはしません」と言いました。
ももたろうは、
おにがしまのたからものをもって、村へかえりました。
村の人たちはとてもよろこびました。
おじいさんとおばあさんも、とてもうれしかったです。
それから、みんなで、しあわせにくらしました。

① おじいさん（ojiisan）
An elderly man. A grandfather-age man.
② おばあさん（obaasan）
An elderly woman. A grandmother-age woman.
③ かわ（kawa）
River. Water flows from mountains to the sea.
④ やま（yama）
Mountain. A high place.
⑤ もも（momo）
Peach. A sweet pink fruit with a big seed inside.
⑥ どんぶらこ（donburako）
A Japanese onomatopoeia.
It describes something large floating slowly on a river.
⑦ きびだんご（kibidango）
A small sweet dumpling. Soft and slightly chewy.
⑧ おに（oni）
A demon or ogre in Japanese folklore.
Usually big, strong, and has horns.
⑨ いぬ（inu）
Dog. An animal that often lives with people.
⑩ さる（saru）
Monkey. Good at climbing trees.
⑪ きじ（kiji）
Pheasant. A bird often appearing in Japanese folktales.

Momotaro does not fight alone.
He works together with his friends.
This shows the importance of cooperation in Japanese culture.

In many Japanese stories, a hero helps other people.
About the History
We do not know who created 「桃太郎」.
It was passed down orally for many years.
Later, it was written down during the Edo period.It is a traditional folktale.
